[DevTeam] [lothaer]: i think these forums are dead, Sylvanaar dosnt post on them as he only bug fixes when possible. WIMs future isnt very bright

[Guest] [Hentaya]: Good thing the shoutbox doesn't have timestamps.
[Guest] [ravensong]: Is WIM going to be updated for the new patch? It gets a LUA error every time people log on bnet or pst me, because "
[Guest] [ravensong]: "surname" is now a nil value.
[Guest] [Dethedrus]: Since WiM is obviously quite dead, is there ANYTHING else out there that even comes close to replicating it's functionality?
[Guest] [Harshmage]: So the "surname" can be removed from the realID detection, in WIM.lua
[Guest] [Harshmage]: but fixing the tutorial popup and other errors is probably not going to happen without a major rework
[Guest] [menace97]: quite dead?
[Guest] [Nytetears]: I am trying out tell track I wish WIM would update I much prefer it but there are too many errors to try and use it now
[Guest] [Erudan]: Wim is being updated on Curse.
[Guest] [Chiaki]: Hello guys! I'm the one who did the German translation of WIM. The translation is somewhat old so tell me where to provide a new version .
[DevTeam] [lothaer]: Check out my new post in the General Discussion. Please report any errors as I can't check them myself.
lothaer pokes Pazza. Hey!
lothaer is overcome with boredom. Oh the drudgery!
lothaer roars with bestial vigor. So fierce!

Assuming this mod has not died, which would make me super sad...

I'd like to see my history permanently saved on my computer somewhere. Even in simple notepad documents.

My history got erased (as well as the mods option settings) again last night and I know for a fact that I never have the "delete old messages" thing checked. Nor do any of my other mods get affected by this strange phenomenon.

If possible, I'd like WIM to save my history on my computer, or perhaps make a backup file of itself so even if it does get erased you can just drag and drop and only lose what you had done that day.

I find this as a 'failing' of many pieces of software, not just WIM or even WoW Addons. I want records of everything; if it gets logged, I do NOT want it deleted. Certainly there are memory constraints on many environments, but if it writes a file to disk, it should be able to rotate that file out of 'current' usage, and into 'archived' usage.

But alas, many developers don't feel this way, or even realize that anyone else can. So, one has to resort to external measures.

WIM, for instance, as you may have noticed, actually keeps some back history. It's in ~/WTF/Account/{account name}/SavedVariables/WIM.lua

Since it's a lua file, we 'know' that it's being loaded into memory every time we start up WoW, and written from memory every time we exit WoW normally. Behaviour when exiting WoW abnormally is rather undefined.

So, what we do, is we set up our computer to 'cycle' that file manually. The easiest way is just to copy it to another archival directory, and add a timestamp to the file name. More complex ways involve actually parsing the Lua file, storing the conversations somewhere, and removing them. But the one thing common to any method we choose, is that we have to do them After We Exit WoW; the addon author can't really do much of anything.

Now, if a batch file or Powershell script that runs 'around' your WoW playing is beyond your computer abilities, consider this an avenue for learning! Smiley  Or, a different sort of request. But "Never Delete Anything" in a WoW LUA addon means "eventually, your game will be out of memory and you'll come complaining about it".

At least, this is how I understand things to be. Please feel free to correct me. Smiley
