[DevTeam] [Zeke]: I love that I get emailed when someone reports spam on the boards, but I can't do anything about it.
[DevTeam] [Nachonut]: lol i got you
[DevTeam] [Astaldo]: How about "hide email address from public checked" and it's still visible in all my posts...
[DevTeam] [Astaldo]: I'd delete my account on this site, but by the time I realized the problem half the spambots on the planet had it already
[Developer] [Pazza]: Astaldo if you log out and view your profile with a refresh you'll see that your email is hidden.
[Developer] [Pazza]: Your user level on the forums permit you to see emails even though they are marked hidden.
[DevTeam] [Astaldo]: Ah.. thanks for the clarification and apologies for "crying wolf" in that case :
[DevTeam] [Kaidenn]: PAZZA! i miss you.
[DevTeam] [Nachonut]: Lol, it's funny how it takes spam message reports to get me to come back
[DevTeam] [sylvanaar]: Check out the beta tester forum. Need alpha testers and feedback so I can come up with a maintenance plan.
[Developer] [Pazza]: loaded some new spam prevention modules... lets see if this stops the bastards.
[DevTeam] [Maziel]: Thought I'd check in and say Howdy Doody from Australia
[DevTeam] [Maziel]: Yeah the spam from shoes salesmen was becoming insane
[Guest] [Delakando]: What ever happened to the ability to track friend's location by wim? Other then just showing their general zone location.
Zeke pokes his head around the corner.
[DevTeam] [Zeke]: Anybody home?
[Guest] [Theillur]: I would like to know if it is just me.
[Guest] [Theillur]: http://www.wimaddon.com/forums/index.php/topic,1796.0.html

Hi,

I've noticed several addons these days notify you of version changes when you startup WoW. How does this work? Its a very nice feature but I'd love to know how the nitty gritty stuff works and how it functions. Could you point me to the code that does this? Or some other form of documentation I can read up on?

THANKS!

It saddens me to share my ways and to hear of other addons doing the same. I beleive I was one of the first to come up with idea. :-)

Anyway, It is pretty simple and it basically uses the ADDON MESSAGE CHANNEL supplied by blizzard. Whenever you join a party, logon and in a guild, a raid or battlegrounds, WIM broadcasts to everyone which version of WIM you are using. If someone sees you have an older version, they spit back their newer version. If a newer version then what you have are currently using, WIM notifies you. Thats it. Simple yet effective.

I think the add-on SpamMeNot does something with monitoring the WoW Ace channel. I am not entirely sure exactly what it is Octane666 is doing but by the sounds of it, this WoW Ace channel checks the online wiki thing that can be updated and if a newer version of that is available it tells you.

I could be totally wrong, but you may also want to look at SpamMeNot and talk with Octane too, see how it is he is doing it, even though Pazza's way is of course no problems and works, there's probably two ways to do the same thing... or more. Cheesy

the check can not be toggled on or off. At least I never added an option for it. It's a make or break feature really. If you don't broadcast, then it wont be helpful for the group as a whole. The way it was designed is, it sends one message when you log on (if in a guild) and when you join a party and raid. Then it just listens to everyone elses broadcast. It will then only reply again if someone else has a lower version than yourself.

This design prevents constant spamming of the message and therefore should not cause such error messages. My guild all use WIM and they nor anyone else has ever reported such a problem.

If you are definite that it is WIM causing this error, then by all means I will look into it deeper. But addons such as SW Stats broadcast WAY more than WIM does and therefore again, shouldn't make it an issue.

I will enlighen you to an undocumented feature however in WIM. the command:

/wim who

This will show you who is using WIM in Guild, Party, Raid and Battlegrounds.

I added that in there for the main reason to appease myself and see if any strangers I encounter are using my addon. :-)
